Umpiring Development

In order to ensure the on-going development of our umpires, Northerns has launched an umpire development project – a much-needed development platform for newcomers to umpiring. In so doing we want to create and provide a practical starting point for new umpires, meaning individuals who have already obtained their Level 0 or Mini-Level 1 grade, and provide them with the necessary basic tools to enable them to find their feet and to learn to deal with the obstacles and challenges umpires face when stepping onto the field.

This is the platform where YOU can start YOUR umpiring adventure!

NB: Important Disclaimer!
This is not a course which a candidate attends in order to be upgraded to a higher level.  It is a development opportunity meant to empower candidates in order that they may get into a position to qualify for an upgrade sooner.  Upgrades during the programme will only happen in exceptional cases, for example for umpires who have been umpiring for some time already and who have simply not yet had the opportunity of being graded.

Level 0 Umpires

The course for umpires who have already passed the Level 0 examination will run over two separate days and will cost R300.  The first day will consist of the following:

  • Rule discussion
  • Practical positioning, whistle tone and signalling
  • Rules application and interpretation

The second day will be arranged between the candidate and the presenter – the candidate will arrange to umpire a suitable match where the presenter can do a final evaluation and de-brief.  All candidates will receive a feedback report after the course.

Mini-Level 1 Umpires

Candidates who have already been graded to Mini-Level 1 (and who submit their grading sheets) will also undergo two days of training at a cost of R300.   Day one will consist of the following:

  • Practical positioning, whistle tone and signalling
  • Rules application and interpretation
  • Fitness testing using the yo-yo test (download the yo-yo test – a 44MB download – HERE)

The second day will be arranged between the candidate and the presenter – the candidate will arrange to umpire two suitable matches where the presenter can do final evaluations and de-brief.  All candidates will receive a feedback report after the course.
